Maths at St Edmund's and St Thomas'

Our Intent & Vision

At St Edmund’s and St Thomas’ Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality mathematics education that equips all pupils with a deep understanding of number, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We aim to build confidence, fluency and resilience in maths so that children can apply their learning across the curriculum and in real-life contexts. We also aim to inspire a love of mathematics and a growth mindset in all our pupils. We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. We promote a positive, inclusive and supportive environment where mistakes are valued as part of the learning process and resilience is developed. We are committed to a mastery approach, where pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts. We also encourage children to talk about their thinking, explain their methods and make connections within their learning. Our ethos is built on the belief that mathematics should be engaging, purposeful and relevant. We aim to foster curiosity, confidence and independence so that all pupils leave our school with the skills and enthusiasm needed for the next stage of their learning and for life beyond the classroom.
